Project Mentoring
For photographers and lens-based artists developing personal, long-term and research-led work. From the early stages of a project through to editing, sequencing, photobook development and publication.
A project can reach a point where it becomes difficult to see clearly from inside. You may have too much material, be unsure what is missing, be struggling with an edit, or be thinking seriously about how the work might become a book.
Mentoring creates a focused space to look closely at the work, clarify its direction and decide what needs to happen next.
My approach
My own practice has developed through long-term projects concerned with personal experience, memory, family and loss. I am particularly interested in work that is still evolving, projects where meaning develops through making, research, editing and returning to the material over time.
My role is not to tell you what the project should become. It is to help you see what is already present, ask useful questions and identify possibilities that can be difficult to see when you are deeply immersed in the work.
Alongside extensive experience teaching and mentoring photographers, I have particular experience in long-term photographic projects and photobook development. I am the author of two monographs, Tulip and A Stranger in my Mother’s Kitchen, both published by Dewi Lewis Publishing, and have experience across editing, sequencing, book design and design collaboration, crowdfunding, production, publishing and bringing photographic projects into book form.
What we can work on
Every project is different. Depending on where you are with the work, we might focus on:
Project development
What the work is becoming, what is working and what might be missing.
Research and context
Artists, writing and research that might deepen the project.
Writing about the work
Project texts, artist statements and finding language that supports the photographs.
Editing and sequencing
Selection, relationships between images, rhythm, narrative and structure
Photobooks and publications
From early book development and sequencing through to dummies, book design and designers, publishers, funding and production.
What comes next
Exhibitions, funding, publishers, applications, press, awards and getting the work out into the world.
Three Month Project Mentoring
Three conversations, with time between them for the work to change.
For photographers who want sustained support while actively developing a body of work. Sessions are normally spaced around four weeks apart.
Includes:
Three individual 75-minute online sessions via Teams
Advance review of work before each meeting
Editing and sequencing where useful
Research and contextual recommendations
One brief email check-in between each session
Autumn 2026 — six places available
You do not need to have a finished or fully defined project. I work with photographers at different stages of practice, including graduates, established practitioners and people returning to their work after time away.
Fee £425
Single Mother Artist Supported Place. One of the six places is reserved for a single mother for whom the full fee would otherwise present a barrier. You can indicate on the application form that you would like to be considered for the supported place.
Fee £250

Project Review
A focused one-to-one session for photographers who want an experienced outside perspective on a project, body of work or developing photobook.
A Project Review can be used to work through the direction of a project, editing and sequencing, what may be missing, or how the work is communicating its ideas.
If you are developing a photobook, we can also look closely at sequencing, structure, pacing, the relationship between image and text, book design, dummy development, publishing approaches, how to approach publishers and crowdfunding.
Before we meet, I review your material in advance so that our 75 minutes can be spent properly discussing the work rather than seeing it for the first time.
75 minutes - sessions take place online via Teams
Fee £165
