CONNECT

In 2018 I was commissioned as part of CONNECT, the public art programme for the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Working alongside artists Helen Sear, Murray Ballard and Zoe Childerley, I was invited to create a permanent body of photographic work for the new hospital.

My commission explored ideas of home and belonging through the theme of Brighton. Working with around 30 local residents and hospital users, I photographed the domestic spaces, objects and details through which people create a sense of familiarity and place.

The resulting work was created for the hospital’s waiting rooms. I wanted the lives of local residents and hospital users to inhabit these clinical spaces, bringing something familiar, personal and human into the experience of waiting.

CONNECT was commissioned by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in partnership with Photoworks and Willis Newson.
